False Awakening

January 29, 2009 at 2:19 am (poems)

Furtively threading the parched landscape
Waking up to feel like I knew most of the colours
To a barren picture that’s not been painted
Yet all that’s left; has but completely faded.

The Bright Lights were being dimmed by monochrome
Their very existence hidden from the rest of the world.
It was a sort of light you only felt on your back
Obscured as it was; but creeping down your neck.

Disavow the pleasure of bittersweet detractors,
Amidst the frenzy of melancholic rifts
Stumbling your way through the litany of emotions swirling
Plodding on still; with the shadows swiftly following

And as I calmly took my place beside you
The final stone tumbling into place
Everything suddenly looks perfect from far away
All is quaint up above; as they sing a last lament from yesterday

You’ve left a beautiful mess behind you
To join the sweet embrace of the darkness beyond
– But with all the emptiness forgone
Try to leave the light on when I’m gone.

While we could wait for Mondays,
Tuesdays would always bring back the same
– So with all the waiting forlorn
I hope you’ll keep a light on when I’m gone.
