The Druggie Wood Spider

Dr Chris John showed this video to us during a lecture on drugs of abuse today and i thought it was just too good not to share!

In the 1960s, Dr. Peter Witt gave spiders various kinds of drugs and alcohol to observe the effects on their webs. The results were pretty interesting.This film about the experiment was created by First Church of Christ, Filmmaker.

i totally dig the crack spider! hahaha hilarious.

another interesting fact learned from the lecture…Coca Cola used to actually contain cocaine! still does, to some degree; hence the “Coca” part.

Dr John also explained that you CAN get addicted to caffeine as it acts on your reward pathway (in the VTA, or ventral tegmental area) to produce euphoria, and any drugs that produces euphoria can be addictive. however, its onset of effectiveness is about 30 minutes, thus it’s not as addictive as say….cocaine which has a much quicker onset of action (and hence much more addictive as the brain makes the link between taking the drug and feelings of euphoria)

still…at least it goes some way in explaining the night i got high on coffee after studying till late one day (over the Christmas holidays);

i ended up being discovered by Jin and Nick raving to trance music playing on the radio in my very own room. hahaha.

in my defence, my room does make for a great rave room when all the lights are off, thanks to my flurouscent lightsaber!
