Horror Movies and Medical Students

what’s with the glut of horror movies involving medical students recently? i’ve always felt that the aforementioned species featured heavily in horror movies, but only recently decided to do a proper search, throwing up the following results:

Medical student Paula Henning (played by Franka Potente) wins a place in a summer course at the prestigious University of Heidelberg Medical School. Her grandfather had a great name there before retiring, including being the discoverer of a useful drug, Promidal. They are tutored by Professor Grombek, who announces the hard work ahead. He also tells them that he will be using the elimination system, where the six lower grades will be periodically discarded. During one of their courses on anatomy, the body of David, a young man that Paula met and helped on the train trip, turns up on her dissection table. She is then humilliated by her teacher, Dr. Grombek, who dares her to cut and dissect the heart. She remarks that the body presents strange cuts, but this is dismissed as bad handling by the morgue caretaker. She decides to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding this death.

A group of medical students travel to a cabin in Øksfjord, and their presence awakens Nazi zombies.

Medical students spike the drink of lethal cocktail mixes on one of their colleagues, accidentally putting him into a coma. One of the students (Arielle Kebbel) attempts to revive him using an experimental of drugs. The result has horrible and unintended consequences.

one of the reviewers actually said this of the movie: “Following in the footsteps of Pathology with the notion of medical students experimenting with drink and drugs, I am beginning to wonder if medical students in reality are in any ways similar to those on screen or have they actually been studying and know the effects such narcotics could have on a person. I dread the thought of being admitted to hospital and finding out the truth.”

to be honest i would say it’s a bit of both. hahaha.

While on vacation in a resort in Mexico, medical student Jeff, his girlfriend Amy, her best friend Stacy and her boyfriend Eric befriend the German Mathias in the swimming pool. The film revolves around a cadaver who seems to bring misfortune on those who come in contact with it. The story takes place mostly inside a hospital, where a young female medical student, Alison Blanchard, comes to learn anatomy. By observing the cadaver she was assigned, she discovers that the body had self inflicted wounds, also had a child. She soon discovers that there is something wrong with the cadaver, which they have nicknamed as Norma.

A pivotal moment in the experience of all medical students is encountering their first cadaver in anatomy class. However, when six fledgling South Korean students dissecting the corpse of a beautiful young woman begin to experience identical troubling nightmares, and some befall gruesome fates, it’s clear that this is much more than standard first-year med-school trauma.

Bárbara is a medical student, a hopeless fashion victim and a relentless psycho-killer. When she mistakingly takes her fellow-student Tomás for a serial killer, it’s love at first sight. Unfortunately, Tomás has invented a drug-fueled device able to project the last image imprinted on a dead man’s retina. With dead bodies piling up on the campus, this will put Bárbara in a very tight spot…

Young intern Ted has just arrived at one of the leading pathology labs in the country fresh from a philanthropic trip overseas after graduating first in his class at Harvard Medical School. He leaves in waiting beautiful, wealthy fiancé Gwen who supports his time away studying dead bodies. Because the group of pathological pathologists already at the lab is pretty set in their weird ways, they don’t exactly greet the newbie with open arms. Not yet anyway.

alright you get the idea. i don’t like how most of them are usually along the lines of:

“a bunch of medical students decide to go on a dream summer vacation to an exotic Asian/Easter European country….with dire consequences”

doesn’t quite bode well for our road trip around Asia come this summer hols, does it? hahaha.

i must admit, however, that the last 2 actually kind of interest me, even though i’m not usually into the horror genre.

Sexykiller looks like the sort of dark comedy i have a thing for, ala Jennifer’s Body. as one reviewer wrote: “The main trump of the film is undoubtedly lead actress Macarena Gómez and her unique depiction of the eccentric yet lovable protagonist character Bárbara. She’s a medical student with the vanity and obnoxious ego of Paris Hilton and the homicidal tendencies of Ted Bundy. Bárbara addresses to the camera and explains in great detail how she commits the murders and why – kind of like in C’est Arrivé Près De Chez Vous (aka Man Bites Dog)” but a lot sillier – and she considers herself to be a very normal twenty-something girl with normal needs and desires. She doesn’t even need to cover up her serial killing crimes, because who would ever suspect a cute, fragile and cherubic looking student like her?”

sounds really promising doesn’t it?

Pathology in particular looks a sure bet for our flat’s Saturday night movie, especially since we just had our last dissection session for the rest of med school the Friday before – during which i realised that the prosected leg we had been working on all this while was female. :/

(Rory: “How can you not know it’s a female’s leg??? IT HAS FEMALE GENITILIA FOR CHRIST’S SAKE! but that’s another story)
