“Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and a pending lobotomy. She ends up in a mental institution in Brattleboro, Vermont, and while there she starts to imagine an alternate reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is captured by an unknown adversary. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.”

Zack Snyder (director of 300 and Watchman, two films i found to be most excellent) has described the film as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”. now that sounds like a friggin awesome idea to me for a movie, although i must admit to being especially partial to films with a whimsical premise; Pan’s Labyrinth, Stardust and Inception to name a few. the trailer features samurais, dragons and futuristic-looking machines and spacecraft. plus girls with machine guns, of course.

Sucker Punch is released March 25, 2011. can’t wait!

PS just got a Sony TX5 camera today after the trusty black T10 i got 4 years ago in Tokyo conked out while doing the Flowbarrel at the Wavehouse last night. it’s advertised as a rugged compact for the outdoor enthusiast, and is designed to be dustproof, waterproof up to 3 meters, cold-proof down to -10°C and shock-resistant for drops of up to 1.5 meters. (it’s also fire-proof if the video below is to be believed) sounds like exactly the camera i was looking out for, especially the waterproof bit. i’m pretty sure it’s going to prove a handy feature for my next few dive/wake/snowboarding trips.

PPS just realised that i’ve actually been on quite the shopping spree over the last 2 days. bought 2 more pairs of shoes too, taking my total spending in 2 days alone to over a thousand. and the shoe count to over 15. hmmm. perhaps a shoe cabinet might be in order soon.

PPPS back to London tomorrow night! (and haven’t started packing)
